How to Effectively Use Anti-Lock Brakes

Article by Delta Driving School

Understandably, being in full control of your vehicle is also an important factor when driving. Have you ever driven in the rain, slammed on your brakes, and found your car skidding and sliding around? There is a braking system designed to prevent this from happening.

What is an Anti-Lock Brake?

Slamming on the brakes can cause the tires to lock up. Seeing as the tires need to be spinning for steering to work, steering can quickly become useless.

Anti-lock brakes are designed to keep you from losing control of your tires and your ability to steer. Instead of activating the brakes all the way and holding them down, the anit-lock brake system works by quickly pressing down on the brakes to slow the vehicle. This method keeps more of the vehicle’s tires in contact with the surface below it. This is all achieved with sensors, a hydraulic pump, and a computer that can monitor the activity of the car. When implemented correctly, this system can effectively shorten the distance it takes for your vehicle to come to a complete stop.

How to Use Anti-Lock Brakes

Although the concept the anti-lock brake system was modeled after required drivers to manually hit the brakes at a rapid pace, modern anti-lock brake systems do not require as much precise timing and technique. Instead, the best way to actually use the anti-lock brake system in your car is to press down on the brakes as you normally would and to let the system take care of the rest.
