Keep Your Mattress in Tip-Top Condition with Protective Covers

The number of bedding products on the market today is constantly expanding, with mattresses and pillows made in more materials than ever, like foam, latex, innersprings, gel, and even air and water. But once you’ve sussed out which you want to go with, the next major step is deciding how you’re going to cover and protect your bedding to get the longest life out of it.

While the idea of sleeping on a bare mattress would never be considered by most people, it remains important to mention.  Even the most basic of covers extend a mattress’ life, as moisture, stains, and wear and tear are all slowed with the added protection of a mattress cover and sheets.

The first step to take is also the easiest: adding a cotton mattress pad to the bed. This kind of cover is easily added, easily washable, and keeps mattresses fresher when washed regularly. A cover provides a layer of protection between a mattress and sweat, spills, or any other accident which can happen. For complete mattress protection, hypoallergenic covers fully encase the mattress and protect it against allergens as well, essentially waterproofing the mattress. These covers, like their simpler fabric counterparts, come in all sizes, from a twin mattress cover, all the way up to California King.

Once a mattress has an adequate degree of protection against wear and tear, adding comfort should be your next concern. Additional comfort-based mattress pads offer another layer of protection. Soft cotton pads can go directly under the bed sheets, or a foam bed mattress topper can be covered on its own and placed atop the mattress for blended, custom comfort. Unprotected beds will be more susceptible to accidental damage, and the accumulation of wear and tear will eventually cause them to age much more quickly than they would have otherwise. At the end of the day, keeping a mattress covered keeps them around longer and in better shape, saving you money and giving you better sleep.
