It’s great to get braces on your teeth. You’ll have a perfect smile within just a year or two. But your teeth will need some special care throughout the time while you are wearing braces. For those who decide on Invisalign, simply remove the plastic retainer and brush as usual. Your gums may be a little bit sensitive so a softer bristle can help with that.
If you are wearing traditional metal braces, then brushing is a little harder. Most orthodontists can recommend special toothbrushes for those wearing braces. You can find these toothbrushes at a local pharmacy. They will usually be labeled “Ortho Toothbrush.”
It’s best not to use a soft bristle with traditional metal braces because the bristles can break off and wind up in your braces. These can be difficult to remove. If you’ve had trouble with this in the past, then ask your orthodontist to recommend a good toothbrush for you.
How Long Should You Brush?
Most experts recommend brushing for two minutes but three minutes is even better. With an electric toothbrush you can, of course, gets more brushing done in a shorter length of time. The most important thing is to make sure that you clean all surfaces of your teeth. Some dentists recommend dividing your mouth into four quadrants and brushing each one for 30 seconds.
How Often Should You Brush?
Most dentists recommend brushing at least twice per day. If too much time passes between brushings, bacterial plaque will build up increasing your risk of gum inflammation or tooth decay. If you are unable to brush after a meal, at least rinse your mouth well. This can loosen and remove food particles.
