PCI Serial Card Basics

Users who need to install a scanner, zip drive, or new printer to a computer can feel frustrated when the machine has run out of available ports! In this case, there is a simple solution—users can add an expansion card that has two or more serial ports. The cards can also replace non-working ports.

A user should first check the computer for available ISA or PCI slots (or a place to put the PCI serial card). To do this, use the computer manual. Specifically, these slots will be found in the motherboard. Assuming you find one, record it and buy the appropriate serial card for the docking station.

After inserting the new card, a user still needs to configure the ports and use the right USB serial adapter to support connectivity. For specifics, users should contact the manufacturer of the computer to be sure that they purchase the right parts.
